Solar power: turning up the heat

Liddell solar thermal station ( the world's first solar-coal fired power augmentation facility) in Australia, installed by AREVA Solar.

AREVA Solar designs, manufactures and installs solar steam generators for the global power generation and industrial steam needs of its customers in a dependable, market-competitive and environmentally responsible manner.
It provides turnkey solutions using Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR), which is the most cost-effective and land-efficient Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology.

CSP: tomorrow’s technology today

Solar energy technology is a rapidly expanding field with many innovative solutions for harnessing the sun’s energy.

With CSP, AREVA leverages its long-standing expertise in thermal technology, fluid mechanics and heat transfer to best serve its utility customers.

AREVA’s steam generators meet the highest quality standards. AREVA is proud to be the first solar steam boiler manufacturer to receive the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ "S" Stamp Certificate, the industry hallmark of acceptance and certification.

With CLFR technology, the company is able to produce superheated steam at high temperatures and pressures of up to 550°C (1022°F) and 165 bar (2394 psia), enabling the group to optimize the power generation and industrial steam requirements of the end-user.

CLFR: reliable CSP technology

AREVA’s CSP solution is built on the compact linear Fresnel reflector (CLFR) technology.

Main advantages of CLFR technology:

  • Design simplicity, leading to lower costs
  • Land efficiency
  • The ability to generate superheated steam at high temperatures and pressures
  • Use of standard commodities available locally
  • Environmental benefits

Delivering power to the sun belt

AREVA improves utilities’ energy mix either by building new CO2-free plants or by boosting the capacity of existing plants with solar generated steam.

AREVA’s CSP installations can also produce solar steam for a variety of industrial applications.

Did you know?

In terms of land use per MWe of capacity, CLFR is the most land-efficient solar technology.

Innovation in action

Thermal storage

Building on its scalable, modular and proven CLFR technology, AREVA’s storage system complements its cost-effective and fully dispatchable suite of direct-steam CLFR solutions, including solar/natural gas hybrid plants and solar augmentation of existing fossil fuel plants.

The group’s evolutionary CSP storage solution combines AREVA’s advanced CLFR design with Sandia Labs’ proven and simple molten salt storage system, further diversifying its low-cost dispatchability solutions to better meet the unique energy requirements of each customer.

This is the first instance of CSP integration with the molten salt test loop system, which is part of the DOE’s National Solar Thermal Test Facility operated by Sandia Labs in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

A long term R&D partnership

Another longer-term R&D path for CSP thermal energy storage is also being explored by AREVA with its French research partners: the CEA (Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission), Hamon D'Hondt company, and three university laboratories and CNRS research centers.

This diversification of technology solutions is a guarantee of the robustness of our solutions portfolio.
